-How to Connect to Eyecopia with Eyecopia Remote-

Eyecopia Remote is a free product, also brought to you by Enjoin. This application works with the Eyecopia program to provide secure video monitoring of Eyecopia servers from remote locations. Eyecopia Remote will receive event notifications and live views from any active Eyecopia server, provided the Eyecopia Remote user is an authorized contact. Eyecopia Remote is the most secure and convenient method of checking in on your Eyecopia server. You will need to make sure that your computer and Eyecopia are properly configured to allow use of Eyecopia Remote. We'll walk you through each process below.

Configure your computer

You may need to configure your computer to allow Eyecopia Remote connections. Eyecopia utilizes port 4135 to receive connections from Eyecopia Remote users. In order for your friends to connect to your Eyecopia server, you'll need to configure your PC and your router (if you have one) to allow external connections on that port. Eyecopia uses a secure communication protocol, and will not accept connections from applications other than Eyecopia Remote, so it is safe to open this port.

Let's start at the beginning--your PC. If you aren't running Windows XP Service Pack 2, skip to the section labeled Routers.

Windows Firewall
  1. To determine your settings for Windows Firewall, open the Start Menu and select Control Panel.
  2. Open the Security Center control panel.
  3. You should see a section entitled Firewall. If it says it is OFF, your computer is not protected by the Windows Firewall, and you may skip forward to the Routers section.
  4. If the Firewall section says ON, you'll need to make sure it allows Eyecopia through. To do this, scroll down to the bottom and select Windows Firewall. In the Windows Firewall control panel, make sure that Don't allow exceptions is unchecked.
  5. Click OK to dismiss the Windows Firewall control panel, and close the Security Center panel.
Routers:
  1. First off, you should figure out whether you have a router. If your computer connects directly to the internet via dial-up, you do not need to read through this section; you are effectively done configuring your computer. Skip forward to the Configure Eyecopia section.
  2. If your computer connects directly to a cable modem or DSL modem, you can also skip to the Configure Eyecopia section.
  3. The main thing you need to do with the router is tell the router to forward incoming connections on port 4135 to your Eyecopia server. We have identified some of the bigger router manufacturers and provided the following links for how to set your router up:
  4. Once you have this port forwarded, you can now configure Eyecopia to receive Eyecopia Remote connections.

Accommodating a Dynamic IP Address

If you have a dynamic IP address, you will most likely want to use a DNS service to secure a domain name for use when connecting to Eyecopia with Eyecopia Remote. While not required, this service makes it much easier for you and your contacts to use Eyecopia Remote.

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP). It is very common for your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to give you a dynamic IP address. In order for Eyecopia and Eyecopia Remote to communicate while experiencing changing IP addresses, we recommend the use of a DNS service.

A DNS service is basically a network lookup service that provides the ability to map hostnames to an IP address. This allows humans to easily remember a name (such as yourname.com) and not a series of numbers that changes on an unpredictable basis. Once a machine receives a new IP address, it will tell that address to a Dynamic DNS server, providing uninterrupted connections between Eyecopia and Eyecopia Remote.

Configure Eyecopia

You need to complete the email setup before proceeding through this section. If you are unsure whether you have set up the email settings, check out the email setup help documentation by following the link above.

  1. Eyecopia makes it easy to get your friends (or yourself) connected from remote locations. First, open Eyecopia and switch to the Notify page.
  2. If you haven't yet added a contact for your friend, you should do that first. If you follow the link above, you will learn how to provide an email address and password for the contact.
  3. To allow your contact access to Eyecopia Remote, you will have to create a notification schedule for them. This will give them permission to log on to view your Eyecopia server only when you decide they can. Follow the link to learn how to create notification schedules.
  4. Once you have a notification schedule for this contact, allow Eyecopia Remote access by turning on the Remote toggle button next to the desired schedule.
  5. Now you can invite your friend. Simply click the Invite button and enter a personalized message to your friend and click Send. If the Invite button is disabled, then first you need to set a password for this contact.
  6. They will receive a message containing the necessary information on how to connect to your Eyecopia server.
  7. There you go! Now, you have a monitoring system that you can securely check on from anywhere in the world!

You will always know when your friends are connected. On the Notify page, the icon next to their contact name in the Contacts list will show up with an image of an eye, and the Eyecopia Remote Connections list will provide detail on their connection.
